Eloping to the Italian Dolomites is a beautiful option if you’re wanting a dramatic and stunning backdrop. In 2009 the mountain region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. I’ve put together a little guide to help you with your elopement planning.

Why elope to the Dolomites?

Elopements aren’t about secrecy, they don’t have to just be the two of you. It’s about having your wedding day tailored to you. Elopements bring the focus of a wedding day back to you two without your day being a performance or a production of a traditional wedding. You can create the best day for the two of you from start to finish with or without guests.

Not only are the Dolomites stunningly beautiful, if you are also an outdoorsy and adventurous couple, then the Dolomites could tick all the boxes to have a long honeymoon with your elopement. With the most stunning mountains and lakes there are plenty of spots to have beautiful photos as well as taking in all the breathtaking scenery on your elopement day.

THE BEST ELOPEMENT LOCATIONS

Lago di Braies

Lago di Braies is a stunning emerald lake with a dramatic mountain backdrop. During the summer season you can rent a boat for a sunrise session to beat the crowds. During the winter the boast are closed and the lake freezes over becoming a beautiful winter wonderland. This is one of my favourite spots in the Dolomites.

Seceda

The summit of Seceda reaches 2518 m but there’s an option to get two cable cars from Ortisei-Furnes and  Furnes-Seceda. This way you can sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Val di Funes

Val di Funes is a great place if you’re wanting to find accommodation close by to where you would like to elope. There are a lovely set of valleys and quaint little villages.

Tre Cime

Tre Cime, also known as the ‘three peaks’ to reach the top car parks there is a 30€ entry. This is a dramatic and stunning option and you don’t have to hike too far from the car park.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO TRAVEL

The summer months are usually the best time to access all the locations. The days are longer but can get extremely busy. To avoid the summer crowds you could have a sunrise early morning ceremony or late afternoon/ sunset. From September – October it gets less busy and could be a good option for the best light and autumn colour.

The winter brings its own unique beauty to the Dolomites, with snow and frozen lakes. The down side is, a lot of the roads may be closed and locations not easily reached as the summer months. The snow lasts until April.

LEGAL SIDE

Italy makes it relatively straightforward for couples who are overseas to get married, I managed to plan my whole elopement and give notice in 5 weeks. Although, I highly recommend more time planning. You will of course need to be over 18,  you can find a link to all the info here. There is also an option to work with a wedding planner who could help guide you through this and a celebrant I can recommend.

The main international airport is  Venice which is about 2.5 -3 hours away from the Dolomites. It’s a good chance to fly in early and enjoy the wonderful city.

Stryn has all year round glacier skiing and is at the foot of the beautiful The Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord has the fifth largest fjord in Noway and the famous ridge for epic photos and views.

Geirangerfjord

With lush green vegetation, waterfalls and UNESCO. Geirangerfjord is a stunning location that has it all.

Romsdalseggen

If you’re wanting a hike for your elopement Romsdaleseggan is easily accessible with scenic views at the top.

Stetind from Stefjordnese

With its jagged mountain shape, Stetind is a beautiful backdrop to have for your ceremony.

The summer months are usually the best time to access all the locations. The days are longer with the ‘midnight sun’ and the temperature is warmer. The fall is beautiful with colours and a little less busy than the summer months. Winter can be harsh conditions, which could make driving around tricky. Winter is the best time to see the northern lights, and if you’re wanting that dramatic scenery. Spring time is still quite cold, but less busy than the summer months and driving conditions will be better.

There are many ways you can make your elopement unique. You could hand-fast, which is where the phrase ‘tying the knot’ came from. Write your own vows, celebrate with a picnic, hike and fizz. The possibilities are endless.

CREATING AN ELOPEMENT TIMELINE

Elopements aren’t a photoshoot, you deserve way more out of your wedding day and have your whole story told from start to finish. Your experience of getting married is still a full day, just like a wedding day. Your activities might be different but it’s more than taking pictures of just your vows and some portraits after. It’s a chance to capture the essence of what you really love doing as a couple. What would your perfect day look like? If you’re having a late afternoon ceremony, then how would you spend your morning? There’s so much to capturing your full story like the getting ready, first look, ceremony, portraits, evening dinner.

HERE’S AN EXAMPLE TIMELINE…

10am: GETTING READY IN A LOG CABIN. Document you both in a relaxed way.

12/ 1pm: LUNCH. A lovely cosy lunch.

2pm: Travel to ceremony

2:30/3pm: Go to your location

3:30pm: Photos at location ceremony

4pm: Drive and explore some beautiful areas to soak in the scenery and to have some photos. t

6:pm: Sunset picnic, or find a cosy restaurant.

TOP LOCATIONS NORTHERN IRELAND 

The causeway coast is one of my favourite locations in Northern Ireland. Theres a reel ethereal feel to this beautiful place and is a filming location for the Game of Thrones. The Giants Causeway has the unique jagged dark rocks and I beautiful cliff coastal path along the sea.

Dunluce Castle 

Set on the Causeway coast, Dunluce Castle is a beautiful and romantic spot to have your elopement by the ruins.

Murlough Bay 

A quiet beautiful bay accessed by a narrow road. Murlough Bay is another Game of Thrones filming location and on a clear day, you can see views of Scotland.

Cushendun caves

Beautiful dramatic caves set on the beach in the North, offering a very unique elopement location.

Mourne Mountains 

A beautiful mountain range to immerse yourself in the beautiful Irish scenery. In the autumn you get beautiful autumnal colour and low light.

Dunseverick Castle 

Another beautiful spot on the clifftop with a castle ruin.

Tollymore Forest Park

It feels like a step back in time to the gothic era. With beautiful woodland. bridges and grottos Tollymore in a stunning place to elope to.

Kinbane Castle 

Set on the Causeway coast, another stunning and dramatic place to elope.

Northern Ireland makes it relatively straightforward for couples who are overseas to get married. You will of course need to be over 18 and will need to look into visas, but you can check out the legal info here. Your ceremony must be held my a humanists if you are wanting to make it legal you can find a directory of humanists here.

The Dingle Peninsula

Set on the Wild Atlantic way, this beautiful spot you’ll often see in photos with it’s beautiful craggy cliffs.

The Conor Pass

Immersed in beautiful scenery and mountains, it’s one of the most stunning places in Ireland to elope to.

The Wicklow Mountains 

A lovely spot overlooking the mountains for a ethereal moody feel.

Killarney National Park

A beautiful poetic location with a sense of calm. The landscapes are stunning with a mountain drops and lakes.

The Faroe Islands are similar to Iceland in many ways, but quieter and with less tourism.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO TRAVEL

The Faroe Islands are usually cloudy, windy with unpredictable weather. You know the ‘all four seasons in one day saying?’ well this sums up the Faroe Islands! The climate is described as ‘Maritime Subarctic’ as winters are relatively mild 3°C and summers 13°C. During the summer, you have sunlight for nearly 20 hours compared to winter 5 hours.

So it’s down to you, but if you want to see these beautiful Islands in all its glory and in the light, then May-October might be the best time.
